Our range of biodegradable labels are an ideal labelling solution for anyone looking to reduce their impact on the environment. Combined with our extremely eco-friendly dry toners used in the printing process, our biodegradable labels are great for use on packaging or as general use stickers. What are biodegradable labels made from?
Just like all labels our biodegradable materials consist of three main layers. The material, the adhesive and the backing paper. We offer one paper material and three film options.
All materials have a compostable and biodegradable adhesive which is permanently tacky when dry making them ideal for product packaging. The adhesive is carefully formulated to include a high content of renewable (non-fossil derived) materials and is certified to European compostable packaging standard EN13432. The adhesive is food safe so it’s an ideal option for scenarios where the labels are likely to meet any edible products.
The Biodegradable Recycled Paper is our most popular eco option. The 80gsm paper is made up of 100% post-consumer paper meaning it is CO2 neutral. In short this means no trees have been cut down to create the product. Paper that has already been used is re-formed into a new recycled paper.
For more specialist products we offer white, clear and metallic film options. These have a semi-gloss appearance unlike the paper option which is matte. All our film materials are still fully biodegradable/compostable and certified to European compostable packaging standard EN13432.
The only part of each label that isn’t compostable is the backing paper which you peel the labels off from. This is formed of clay coated kraft paper which also contains silicone. This can be recycled by using a specialist process which “washes off” the silicone or other release agent, allowing the pulp to be recycled. Only specialised recyclers can do this, and you would need to check with your recycling authority. Sticker Gizmo is Certified Zero Label Waste to Landfill, so all our label waste is recycled in this way.
What can Biodegradable Labels be used for?
Biodegradable labels can be used in most environments excluding anywhere they are likely to get consistently wet or fully submerged. They are sticky enough to be used outside however they aren’t likely to last as long in the elements. They are splash proof, so a little bit of water isn’t an issue.
They are ideal for use on biodegradable packaging as they won’t need to be removed. Most labels are temporary and are disposed of after a product has been used which is another reason why more and more brands are switching to biodegradable alternatives.
